Serenity Park This Morning

Everyone else stayed up crazy late, either watching chick flicks (wife) or playing games (everyone else) I went to bed early, got up at 3:30 AM and again at 6:00 AM with pages from folks with computer issues - it pays well though.

So when I left early to hand off on call I decided to stop by my go-to and do some fishing.

There were quite a few active, small one pound and under bass in the pond. Some bream hassled the fly for a bit as I worked my way down the shoreline.

Then, down on the western end I saw something I've never seen before. Hassling the fly, aggressively pursuing the fly were B.O.B.s (big old bream) They were in the same formations, same characteristic charge and drop back. But they were so much bigger that it sorta took my breath away. I got two before the rest wised up and boogied.

I am gonna do some research on Community Pond limits because I think that pond might need culling. But I will defer to TPWD on the matter. There are beaucoup bitty basses.

This was a fine sight to see, a group of boys chunking hot dogs and fried chicken and hauling in honking big channel cats for a small pond. One weighed eight and the other one, shown below, weighed in at five. These guys came loaded for bear; sombreros, scales, hot dogs and chicken parts! :)

I kept hearing all this gawd-awful splashing down at the pier. They were catching bream and leaving them on the hook and splatting them on the surface to jig up the bass. Quite the innovators!

Zebra Mussels Spreading in Texas

Invasive Threat Believed to be Entering Trinity River via Lake Lavon

AUSTIN, Texas — Invasive zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) have been confirmed to have spread from Lake Texoma into the head waters of Lake Lavon, and experts fear they could eventually spread throughout the Red River and Trinity River watersheds.

Zebra mussels multiply rapidly and can block water treatment plant intakes and pipes as well as attach themselves to boats, ropes or anything else left in the water. They can cause declines in fish populations, native mussels, and birds. They can also restrict water flow in pipes, foul swimming beaches, damage boat engine cooling systems and cause navigation buoys to sink. The financial cost of controlling and removing zebra mussels from fouled water intake structures can be significant.

Since 2006 there have been five documented cases of zebra mussels being found on boats at Lake Texoma that were trailered in from other states. All five boats were quarantined and cleaned of all mussels prior to being allowed to launch into Lake Texoma. However, April 3 of this year marked the first time that an adult zebra mussel was documented as living in Texas waters. Since that time, additional live specimens have been reported in Lake Texoma and are now believed to be well established.

In addition, on Aug. 3 live zebra mussels were found in West Prong Sister Grove Creek in Grayson County approximately 300 yards downstream of the Lake Texoma water transfer pipe. This creek flows into Lake Lavon.

"The only motile stage of this animal is the veliger (larvae), which, in Lake Texoma, had to be a product of reproduction," said Bruce Hysmith, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) inland fisheries biologist for Lake Texoma.

"The larvae are free floating in the water column, and some were likely transported via the North Texas Municipal Water District water transfer system into West Prong Sister Grove Creek," Hysmith said. "While we have no proof, we feel certain zebra mussels are in Lake Lavon."

Hysmith said TPWD has deployed sampling equipment throughout Lake Lavon from the U.S. 380 bridge to the south shoreline and will be monitoring to see if zebra mussels show up and confirm department suspicions.

"Lake Lavon is in the headwaters of the vast Trinity River Basin, which extends southward to the Gulf of Mexico, so the potential impacts to water quality, fisheries resources, water distribution systems and recreation are huge," Hysmith said.

"Zebra mussels have the potential to be an even greater threat to Texas freshwater resources than invasive aquatic plants such as giant salvinia and toxic organisms such as golden alga," said Phil Durocher, director of TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division.

Zebra mussels pose a possible threat to North Texas water supply and distribution systems. Their spread is magnified by the interconnection of many reservoirs within the DFW area through water transfer pipelines.

According to the online National Atlas of the United States, "Once zebra mussels become established in a water body, they are impossible to eradicate with the technology currently available. The cost of dealing with zebra mussels varies widely, [but] for many plants, costs average hundreds of thousands of dollars a year."

Zebra mussels originated in the Balkans, Poland, and the former Soviet Union and were first introduced in North American in 1988 in Lake St. Clair, a small water body connecting Lakes Huron and Erie.

In the coming weeks TPWD will be working with local, state and federal agencies, reservoir controlling authorities and water districts to develop a plan for dealing with this latest invasive threat to Texas waters.

Boaters and anglers can help slow the spread of zebra mussels from one water body to another by practicing the following steps when leaving any water suspected of having zebra mussels.

Drain all water from the boat including such things as the engine, bilge, livewells and bait buckets before leaving the lake.
Inspect the boat and trailer and remove any zebra mussels, vegetation or foreign objects that are found.
Wash your boat and trailer at a commercial carwash using high pressure and hot (140-degree) soapy water. Hot water, 140 degrees F, will kill zebra mussel veligers, and when the water from the carwash goes through a waste water treatment plant the process should kill any remaining mussels.
Open all compartments and livewells and allow the boat and trailer to dry for a week before entering another water body.
Boaters and anglers can also help by reporting sightings of suspected zebra mussels to the Operation Game Thief toll-free hotline at (800) 792-4263. OGT is Texas’ wildlife crime-stoppers program, a function of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Law Enforcement Division. OGT offers rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of individuals who violate game and fish laws.

Al Crise, Ol' Al as we all know him, will be hosting another casting clinic. The original date of 13 September was a bit blown out of the water so to speak by Ike's arrival. But it's back on! If you are at all interested in gaining more skill as a caster this might be the best $100 you ever spent. Plus the fellowship of other fly casters and a chance to fish the Brazos and/or Paluxy Rivers quite nearby Al's place.

Yesterday after work I drove over to my little neighborhood creek for some decompression and angling.

As I stood in the door of my truck stringing up the one weight I saw them headed my way. Seven and five years old and dressed in standard issue little boy summer attire...shorts, that is all.

"Are you going fishing?!"

"Yep, sure am"

"Have you fished before?"

"I've fished a few times"

"Do you know how to put that all together?"

"Yes, I believe that I do"

"Do you have the dealy-thing? If you don't you can borrow mine"

"That is very kind of you to offer; I think I'll be OK"

"There is a big old snake down there!!"

"There aren't any fish down there. (pointing to the stretch of weedlined bank below). There is a big fish down there!"

"I saw a gold fish! it was BIG!!" (resident koi)

"Guys, I am going to be casting this thing down there so please be sure to stay back. I sure would feel bad if I were to hook one of you"

"OK, we'll just go jump in the water a while"

"Oh please don't do that. It'll ruin the fishing for me"

Then they were off to score Popsicles from apparently grandpa or a neighbor who dotes on them. I last heard them discussing the relative merits of sharing candy.

What I had initially knee-jerked as a big ding in my angling time turned out to be a refreshing break in my initial refreshing break.

in 1903 oil was discovered and Caddo was raised with a low water dam to allow drilling. This is an old abandoned well in the Big Green (a section of the main lake)

Shawn from the Triton dealer in Marshall TX drove one of the camera boats, and squeezed in some fishing as well!

The weather was oddly and unseasonably cool. Very light rain on day one, we dodged the bullet on day two as a big storm blew in just after we got off the water. I lost track of bream and small bass that I landed on my three weight. You can rest assured that I will be back to Caddo as soon as I possibly can.

Poor Serenity Pond

no photos right now. But the pond is a good three feet down and not looking active at all. usually there are throngs of fussy blugills in hot pursuit of flies most all times. But not lately.

Ironically, there is an irrigation system leak in the surrounding park that is sending a steady flow of water across the parking lot, into the rain gutter and down into the nearby creek. I am emailing the city today in hopes of getting that fixed.

Maybe someone upstream of the Serenity pond inflow will need to drain a swimming pool in the next few days.

Update, called the city and someone is headed over to look at the leak. Still, Serenity pond needs water so I can go fishing...

Beatin' The Heat at Serenity

Set the alarm for 6:00 AM and actually woke up and headed out! It's easy to roll over on a Saturday morning and blow it off .But I didn't and I went and I am glad that I did.

It would have been nicer to get there before the sun got up but I won't get too greedy. At least I was on the water.

Started off with a yellow and chartreuse foam spider:

This was the first fish of the day. He fought like a champ. Three weight rod was OK but I sure wish I'd brought the one weight. Two thirds less rod equals ten times the fun factor!

I kept on working my way around. I switched over to a Bitch Creek nymph but that seemed not to be all that interesting so back to the oam spider. As I worked on down the north shoreline I saw a fascinating sight. A very small bass or a bold bluegill came out of the water a good four or five inches trying to nab a dragonfly out of the air .He was unsuccessful but I wished him luck in the future.

Off the western shore lies a flat where the bream bed each season. I have dubbed it "Catfish Alley" as this is where I landed this fellow a few weeks ago and then this morning a channel cat took the foam spider. What a battle! Again, my initial thoughts were "nice bass!" but then the rugged, slugging, bore to the core of the earth battle started telling me I had a cat. Then I saw his dorsal fin and there was no doubt.

Here he is. He refused to cooperate for the photo shoot!

A little farther on down the shore I hit my last fish of the day, a little battling bass.

Everybody liked that foam spider. This is despite my concerted efforts to increase my skills and learn to tie Bitch Creeks. I did land one little old bluegill on the Bitch Creek there at the end. But by then I was ready to go and was too lazy to take a picture.

I'm indoors now and plan on remaining so until late tonight or wee tomorrow.

We are talking diagonal cutters to get free from the carpet and then a caring and loving wife with a large pair of pliers snatching it free from the flesh of the big toe - right by the nail.

Jack Plotts Has Passed Away

I received an email from Jack's son that he passed away last night in his sleep. Jack had been battling cancer for several years, far longer than the doctors ever expected him to.

These past few weeks he had been sending me photos of some of his foam flies and some lures he had made. At his behest I am posting them for public use on my Flickr page

Jack lived up in Illinois and I am here in Texas so we never met face to face. But over these past few years I came to know him via our correspondences. Quite a friendly and caring fellow. I will miss his humor and know how and friendly demeanor.

McKinney Trout Derby

Well, the derby gets more and more popular each year and more and more folks show up to fish. It's getting to be so that there isn't room around the shoreline any longer.

My son did not have the grand time I'd hoped he would and actually quit early.

I need to seriously review my participation, it's not the same anymore (but nothing does stay the same does it?)

Perhaps more fish, more shoreline? It bears review. At least there are tons of kids having fun.

I feel that perhaps Lake Texoma does not get the credit it deserves. To remedy this slight I post about the raucous striper fishing right below the dam. See above image and click the title for directions.
Whatever sort of tactics one prefers this is a place to go to. Bring sink line, Clousers and other streamers (this past week I saw Cat's Whisker steadily catch fish for over an hour).
Also bring waders and an Oklahoma license. If you step foot into the river you are in Oklahoma.

Visited Serenity Park Again

These were the only two photos I got on this trip. Dan and I met at the pond around quarter of seven. Fished the foam spider on the zero weight. That is one popular little pattern. I landed quite a number of bluegill, dinks and a few fat, round, orange-bellied nice ones.

The height of the fun had to have been the bass who took a bluegill I was fighting, made a bold run for the brush. My little zero weight was bent over double! Had to struggle to keep it from reaching a dangerous degree of bend. It was like being snagged on a log. Then he was gone, along with the bluegill and the foam spider. Funny, because I was about to take it off and swap it out due to one set of legs having been pulled off by dink attacks. Tying Tip; glue the legs after tying them in.

So here's a question; how many of my dear readers have hoked up with a bass (or any fish) in this fashion and how many times have the fish been landed? I'd like to hear from you in the comments on this point.

Hidden Agenda

Most folks in McKinney know about Towne Lake. It's a popular jogging and picnicing spot plus a lot of fishing get done there.

But just to the east (right as one looks at the map) is a hidden pond. Alligator Lake might be it's nickname as this was where a small alligator was found a few years back.

I have seen good sized carp rolling and splashing in this pond but have yet to fish it enough to know what all resides therein.

Anyone fished it? Any reports? Besides the alligator that is.

In advance, apologies for truncated images, I am working on that part.

After my last trip to Serenity Park and seeing the large-sized Micropterus salmoides as opposed to the bass that put the "micro-" in Micropterus, I decided that I'd hit it early with poppers and get hooked up with some. On our last trip we saw big bass feeding on bluegills, one of which was already on my line.

We got to the park around 6:00 AM, still dark. A cottontail was out feeding, he was a bit skittish but hung around while the spotlight was put on him and two photos taken. Not that wild at all.

This was the only fish landed. Not in the class of fish I was hoping for but hey, he was a blast on the one weight!

Someone or someones liked Keystone Light, but not enough to bother walking to the trashcan on the way out. Perhaps worried about mommy and daddy catching them? Who knows but it will take a boat to get those cans out.

Quick and dirty tutorial on how to embed a hyperlink on TFR (and apologies for image clarity, hope you get the idea OK)

Here is the target page. Highlight and copy the URL

In TFR, type in the text you'd like to embed the URL within and highlight it

Click on the little chain link icon in toolbar

which gives this work window where the target URL is pasted (don't worry about the protocol dropdown, leave it at default)

Click OK and voila! An embedded URL
